Dolores Huerta, 1966: The workers are on the rise. There will be strikes all over the state and throughout the country, because the workers have shown that they are no longer alone. On behalf of the National Farm Workers Association, we unconditionally demand that the governor call a special session to enact a collective bargaining law for the farm workers of California. We will be satisfied with nothing less. If the rules to settle our economic problems are not forthcoming, we will call on a general strike. The social and economic revolution of the farm workers is well underway, and it will not be stopped until we receive equality.

Dolores Huerta was a hero of mine. When she co-founded the National Farm Workers Association in 1962, people thought Dolores was crazy. “How are you going to organize farm workers,” she remembered being asked. "They are poor, powerless immigrants.” But that’s exactly what she did, helping thousands of migrant laborers working in brutal conditions make their voices heard, and demand something better. Dolores spent the rest of her life fighting for marginalized communities, even as she herself faced sexism and abuse — including, as she revealed earlier this year, from Cesar Chavez and others within her own movement. She also came up with a pretty good slogan, “Si, se puede” — Yes, we can — that I too often get credit for. But as usual, Dolores got there first. Dolores Huerta showed generations what people can do when they organize for a better future. A co-founder of the United Farm Workers, she fought for farmworkers’ dignity and gave the movement its rallying cry: ¡Sí, se puede! Her legacy lives on in everyone working to change the world.

Jill and I are mourning the loss of our friend Dolores Huerta, a giant of the American labor and civil rights movements. For more than seventy years, Dolores fought for working people. She organized in the fields, she walked the picket lines, and she sat across the table from people who never expected to have to negotiate with her. I say often the middle class built this country, and unions built the middle class. Dolores understood that in her bones. Well into her nineties she was still traveling, marching and organizing for working families, for women, for immigrants, for LGBTQ Americans. Even this year, she showed a different kind of courage, telling a painful truth she had carried for sixty years so others would not have to carry theirs alone. America is fairer and more decent because of Dolores Huerta. Jill and I send our love to her entire family, and to everyone who found their voice because of her. May God bless Dolores Huerta. Sí, se puede.

With the passing of Dolores Huerta, Hillary and I have lost a dear friend, and we’ve all lost a stalwart champion of working Americans. Dolores wore many hats: voting rights advocate, human rights champion, die-hard Democrat, self-described “born-again feminist,” and co-founder of the United Farm Workers of America. To see her in action was to witness a living legend who never stopped pushing for progress and seeing every new obstacle as a fresh opportunity to educate, to organize, and to uplift—even as those efforts sometimes brought her grave consequences. I will never forget and always be grateful for her support for Hillary in 2008 and 2016. It was an honor to award her the Eleanor Roosevelt Human Rights Award in 1998 and a great gift to spend time with and fight alongside her. Our hearts go out to her family and the countless Americans whose lives were forever changed by her good long life.
