Maria Callas' voice to travel over Athens once more
A museum dedicated to her will open in 2015
A museum dedicated to the great soprano Maria Callas (1923-1977), is expected to open in Athens in 2015. Visitors to the museum will be greeted and accompanied by the recordings that left an indelible mark in global opera.
The museum plans were presented, today, at a press conference held in the building that will house it, on 44 Mitropoleos Str. The building itself is under the law of historical preservation and was purchased by the state, four years ago, in 20140. It totals 1,070 square meters, and will only require minor modifications in order to transform it into the museum. Said transformation will cost the state 1 million euros, which will be offset by bringing the project under the National Strategic Reference Framework funds programme. According to Athens Mayor, G. Kaminis, it will be ready in 2015.
“This museum is the least the city may do to honour this exceptional interpreter, the great opera diva,” Kaminis stated. “It is a museum that is not addressed just to opera fans, but mostly to those not familiar with the opera”.
It will be managed by the city’s Cultural, Sports and Youth Organisation, while Technopolis will be responsible for its creation.
Museum experts stated that the museum would focus on giving a sense of theatrical atmosphere, with stage sets and a background of Callas’ voice, while providing a historical context of her era, and a timeline of her life.

Most of the exhibits, at first, will come from the collection of Technopolis, but loans and gifts that agencies, individuals or other museums give, will also be accepted. There will be a café - “La Divina” - accompanied by a shop. A library and special listening area will also be included, as will another area for recitals and small-scale concerts.
