AKEL proposal to exit the euro torments SYRIZA

The ghost of the Cypriot crisis still wanders over SYRIZA who is seriously concerned with the AKEL proposal for rejection of the memorandum and the loan agreement and a parallel exit of Cyprus from the euro.

The leaders welcomed the proposal of the left Cypriot party a little puzzled or even cautious, avoiding comments or criticisms. But the SYRIZA left wing, with Panagiotis Lafazanis as their leader, rushed to greet the decision as historic and to welcome the logic of AKEL.

Few hours after the announcement of the AKEL decision - the first leftist party of the European Union with a governmental background and perspective, proposing an exit from the euro - the official Left current website www.iskra.gr, published an extensive article, which advocates the position of the sister party of Cyprus.

These developments bring back to SYRIZA the discussion about the prospect to request an exit from the euro, if removing the memorandum leads to a freeze of the loan agreement. The moderate wing that currently dominates in the leading group, believes that there can be no orderly exit from the euro and that such a rupture can even lead to a memorandum under a national currency. In other words it could lead the country outside the euro, but its borrowing needs will force it to sign onerous loans.

 The article posted on www.iskra.gr states inter alia that "the decision of the Plenum of the Central Committee of AKEL could be described not only as important but, perhaps, historical as well. This decision of the CC of AKEL comes to confirm that this party, rather, has begun to abandon the policy of neoliberal pro-EU management of previous years and adopts a radical new path still of unknown consistency, stability, extent and depth, all of which will unfold over time. AKEL, also, compared with other anti-memorandum forces calls into question not only the memorandum but points directly and correctly, that the solution lies "out of the loan agreement with troika (EU-ECB-IMF)."
