Over 10000 applications for 17 traffic police spots in Milan
A record number coinciding with record numbers in unemployment
A record number of Italians have applied for 14 positions of traffic police in Milan, as Italian media reported today, while according to official statistics, unemployment in Italy remains at the highest level for 37 years.
Some 10000 people participated in the exam organize by the city council of Milan to fill 14 seats for traffic controllers, as broadcast by state television RAI.
A journalist of the network interviewed a candidate who wished to remain anonymous, and stated that she is an unemployed Law Graduate with two Masters degrees.
"In a difficult employment situation, the applications number was massive. A large number of candidates was expected, but not as high as this", commented RAI.
The last time that Milan organized a competition for the recruitment of 50 traffic police, in 2007, 7000 applications were submitted. According to local authorities, new positions for 150 traffic policemen will open in 2017.
The Italian Statistical Office (Istat) announced that the unemployment rate in March reached 12.7%, while in January, it was at a record high since 1977. Amongst the young, unemployment rates stand at 42.7%.
