The handling of the Acheloos diversion is taking on new dimensions, bringing ministers Tina Birbili and Dimitris Reppas, of the Environment and Infrastructure respectively, on opposite sides once more.

This time the cause is the "slap in the face" of the CoS to the request of the ministry of Infrastructure for the revocation of the decision which banned any diversion works before the questions submitted to the European Court are answered. Using the argument that there is a risk of the tunnel collapsing,  the ministry had filed a request months before for a partial suspension of the decision of the Supreme Court, but it was partially upheld.

The CoS urges the ministry of Infrastructure to indicate within 30 days what the absolutely necessary aid or replacement measures of temporary support are in order not to endanger the stability of the tunnel.

Yesterday in its statement the ministry of Infrastructure gave its own interpretation of the fate of the project, arguing that "it will be judged primarily by the court ruling of the European Union on the questions raised by the CoS and secondly, by the completion of new studies of water district management in Western Greece and Thessaly and the adoption of new environmental conditions of the project prepared by YPEKA". It would even comply with the requirements of the court.

Yesterday partners of the Environment minister indicated that the studies for management plans do not include new environmental conditions and that there is need for the works to keep up with the management plan of each region in the spirit of the framework/directive on water. So, the ministry insists that the project must be proven to be necessary not so much based on developmental criteria but more on scientific ones.

It is the third time the Environment ministry separates itself from the operations of the co-responsible ministry! The first was when the government was "fresh", when Birbili was set against the continuation of the diversion works prior to the completion of management studies. The second was the refusal to sign the revocation of the CoS decision.
