"Forget the reshuffle and get to work," is the Greek premier’s message to his ministers.
His colleagues say that Samaras said there is no time to lose and everyone will have to work throughout the Passion Week, and leave only for the Epitaph and the Resurrection. The PM wants to exploit the good climate he believes has been created after the passing of the multi-bill and the decision on the disbursement of the tranche by the Eurogroup. An associate of his said "by June and the next troika audit everything should be finished. We must not have the problems we had last March, and all ministers should speed up their work."
To those who have slowed down due to their waiting on the reshuffle, Samaras says it will take some time and if they want to have a chance to stay in government they should start working more productively and be in their offices when he calls. The teamwork he will ask for and the prospect of a new European party require unanimity at least by the current forces.
Until then, however, his main priority is redundancies in the public sector. Although minister Antonis Manitakis insists that the government's obligation towards troika is for about 4,000 layoffs until the end the year, Samaras wants the first 2,000 gone by the end of June. He wishes to show there are no doubts not only for the government's intentions in this matter but also its determination to implement that commitment. Of course last year Samaras said there will be no layoffs of civil servants, but now stresses he must break the taboo of permanence in the public sector and that the position of those who will be fired will be filled by new and able employees who will upgrade the public sector. He also invests heavily on the recapitalization of banks and the stay of National Bank on Greek hands as well as in privatizations, in order to send a message to the markets that the economy is slowly but surely entering a reset phase.
The meeting of political leaders, however, will probably be transferred for after Easter as Samaras wants to freeze the political game.
