Public sector pensioners increased by 81,000 the last 8 years

According to data presented in parliament by Deputy Finance Minister Christos Staikouras the number of retired state employees is increasing the last 8 years and has risen to 22% or 8,181.654 new retirees for 2005 to 2013.

The increase in gross amounts the Greek State is required to pay each year is analogous, from 4.2 billion in 2005 to 6.56 billion in 2013.

In detail, the figures are as follows:

-       in 2005 the number of pensioners was 367,687 and the expenditure on pensions amounted to 4.2 billion euros

-       in 2006 the number of pensioners was 372,190 and the expenditure on pensions amounted to 4.6 billion euros

-       in 2007 the number of pensioners was 378,307 and the expenditure on pensions amounted to 5.12 billion euros

-       in 2008 the number of pensioners was 392,471 and the expenditure on pensions amounted to 5.99 billion euros

-       in 2009 the number of pensioners was 406,271 and the expenditure on pensions amounted to 6.58 billion euros

-       in 2010 the number of pensioners was 413,246 and the expenditure on pensions amounted to 6.24 billion euros

-       in 2011 the number of pensioners was 432,994 and the expenditure on pensions amounted to 6.56 billion euros

-       in 2012 the number of pensioners was 441,768 and the expenditure on pensions amounted to 6.56 billion euros

-       in 2013 the number of pensioners is 449,341 and the expenditure on pensions is, according to official data so far, in 1.95 billion euros (data up to April 2013)
