Venizelos asks for a leaders meeting - Stournaras informs Kouvelis

PASOK president Evangelos Venizelos wishes to convene the council of political leaders involved in government before the Troika’s visit to Athens.

At noon on Wednesday, Venizelos contacted prime minister Antonis Samaras and asked for a meeting of the political leaders after Stournaras' visit to Berlin. Shortly afterwards PASOK noted that the meeting is necessary, "because developments have increased also in view of the Troika’s arrival."

The government, however, said the desire of the prime minister is that the meeting of the three leaders take place after the Troika’s visit.

According to information from the Democratic Left, there was no telephone meeting between Samaras and Kouvelis until early Wednesday afternoon. PASOK confirmed the teleconference between Venizelos and Samaras.

On Wednesday afternoon there was also a telephone meeting between Fotis Kouvelis and Finance minister Yannis Stournaras.

Kouvelis asked for a briefing on Stournaras’ trip to Berlin. According to information from the Democratic Left, Stournaras described the atmosphere of his talks with Schäuble and Westerwelle as positive. He said it was different from any other time. And he added that we need to implement all that we have promised in order for the country to regain its credibility. Lastly, Schäuble and Westerwelle stressed that they await the report of the the Troika.
