Riot police opens up landfills

The Filis landfill opened up on Sunday morning, in the presence of a prosecutor and riot police, and now private garbage contractors are depositing trash there.

Around 20 strikers who had blocked the gates with large containers were in the landfills.

However, according to POE-OTA president Themis Balasopoulos’ statements, employees will continue their strike untilThursday..

Th. Balasopoulos also blamed private contractors for depositing garbage near the Badminton Court, but also near the old airport next to residential areas.

However Giorgos Kaminis, mayor of Athens, went to court on Saturday, asking that the strike be declared illegal and unauthorized.

The appeal will be discussed on Monday; however, POE-OTA will be holding a press conference at noon on Sunday to discuss Mr. Kaminis’ appeal.

Meanwhile, the health provision of the municipality of Thessaloniki was issued by Health Minister Andreas Loverdos on Saturday so that the trash collection could begin.
