“This was not done by the Cores. It was another organization…”

The bomb that was placed in the Neos Kosmos IRS office yesterday afternoon has caused intense speculation and concern to the leadership of the Hellenic Police about what will follow in the coming days.

The prevailing opinion at the antiterrorist unit was that they were through with the attacks – at least for a few months – after the arrest of the last five, who were accused of collaborating with the «Conspiracy of the Cores of Fire». «Any possible remaining members could not have pulled off such an operation. So, there is another organization behind yesterday’s attack; probably the «People’s Will» or the «6th of December». But still, we are looking at a disturbing upgrading of their actions».

Highly reliable information indicates that the bomb placed by unknown individuals at the Neos Kosmos IRS office, was a very strong explosive device consisting of a fairly large quantity of dynamite, gunpowder, an electronic detonator, a battery and a timer.

Police are firstly looking into why it did not go off. «We have not yet determined whether it was a manufacturing mistake due to inexperience, «failure»  of the material used or whether a passer-by, who was a policeman, knew what was going on and started spraying the bomb with the fire extinguisher to prevent it from exploding... If it had, it would have done a great deal of damage. That's why the stranger who phoned a newspaper and a television station, gave many details about its exact location», says a source from the ministry of Citizen Protection.

They are looking into prints, DNA, phones and cameras

The antiterrorism investigations are moving fast and in all directions. They fear that because of the following 3 days being dominated by the summit, some will try to create impressions. According to sources, the investigations are carried out as follows:

* The fact that the mechanism was found almost intact may lead them to identifying fingerprints or even DNA. But this will become known within the next few days...
* They are examining the traffic management cameras and those of the nearby buildings for possible movements by the offenders. Besides, this was a time bomb that must have been placed before 13:30. Therefore, they have a time limit to investigate the material of the cameras.
* It is a matter of time until they pinpoint the spot from where the stranger called the media. It is possible that it was a public telephone; however, more clues might come in once the area is revealed.
* The type of the explosive material provides information about its origins, and how it reached the terrorists; that is, if it was stolen, whether the same lot was used in another attack, or whether the perpetrators got it from the black market.

An easy target without guarding

The target was chosen probably because there are no guards, and reveals great symbolism. «It does not have a recording system and has an easy escape route. We were impressed by how the man who made the calls left so many clues...», a police officer said.
