Staikouras: The recession will end this year
"It is estimated that in 2014 the recession will end and the economy will begin to recover," Greek Deputy Finance Minister Christos Staikouras said in parliament during the debate on the bill for the account balance and financial report for 2012, which was passed by the New Democracy and PASOK MPs.

"The fiscal policy goals are being met. After many years the country achieves a viable primary surplus, well above the initial and subsequent predictions. The economic climate has improved. The cost of borrowing has declined. Enterprises are beginning to raise capital from the markets, bond loans are being issued. Deposits gradually return to the domestic banking system, although the losses from the beginning of the crisis remain high," he said.

The deputy minister cited figures, according to which “the State, given the credit crunch, strengthened the liquidity in the economy to a feasible extent. It paid about 6.2 billion euros in overdue debts and it returned taxes of about 3.1 billion euros.”

Staikouras attacked SYRIZA saying that its representative Euclid Tsakalotos provided for 2014 many reviews of the budget. "By updating the economic policy program we see that there is no fiscal or funding gap in 2014, nor a supplementary budget as you believed.”

“A primary surplus and sharing of the money to the unemployed created by the primary surplus? These are your achievements?" the parliamentary opposition spokesman remarked.

"The attitude of the opposition is purely undermining. They talk about a rigged exit to the bond markets and rigged figures and question the adequacy of Greek banks. They are completely aligned with the IMF, " ND spokeswoman Sophia Voultepsi observed.

From PASOK’s side its rapporteur F. Sahinidis and its counsel P. Koukoulopoulos, spoke against ND for its refusal to support the government of PASOK in the last effort the party made to stabilize public finances.

"The Democratic Left did not vote in favor of the first memorandum, nor the second, nor for the mid-term," Dim. Anagnostakis (DIMAR) said.
