Matantos: The plea of the man who handed out bribes of 81 million euros
How the 66-year-old shipbroker explains his bribing - He speaks about Tsochatzopoulos, Emmanuel, Avataggelos, Beltsios, Zigras and others to whom he was handing out the bribes
"In October 2003 there was a new agreement with Vereteki where the rate of 5% was indicated as my commission for compliance with the OECD. Eventually I got paid about 2.5% of the German commission that amounted to about 1.8 billion. So I received with caution about 28 to 29 million euros and gave about 51-52 million euros to third parties in accordance with their instructions. Total payments reached 80 million euros and were all made to the UBS in Lucerne."
These are the last words of the plea of the 66-year-old shipbroker Michael Matantos, who is being accused that from 1997 to 2007 he was bribing people among whom the convicted former Defense Minister Akis Tsochatzopoulos and was legitimizing black money that came from the slush funds of the German company HDW and Ferrostaal who had taken up the construction of the 214 type submarines.
In his plea, Matantos about the kickbacks he gave over a decade in order to advance the construction of German submarines from HDW shipyards and Scaramangas, how he credited 23 million euros to accounts of Alexandros Avataggelos despite claiming that he didn’t know him and why he gave 3 million Swiss francs to Tsohatzopoulos’ cousin Nicholaos Zigras.
Michael Matantos, a 66-year-0ld shipbroker who resides in London reveals among other things that he gave 2.5 million in a company of S. Komnopoulos who were then representative of the Swedish shipyard Kockums, despite the fact that this Swedish company was acquired by the German HDW in 1999, i.e. before the signing of the construction contract of the German type 214 submarines on February 15, 2000. "It was an exchange so as not to be hostile to the German consortium," Matantos supported to Gabriel Mallis and Yannis Stavropoulos wanting to justify why gave that money to a representative of a company that was bought by the German company which himself represented and eventually won the contract.
After his plea, Matantos was released on restraining orders and a bail of 500,000 euros.
