Discussions behind the curtain about the formation of a government
The policies they are to follow are discussed by party members at the moment, while at the same time the ND leader is trying to see who is interested in working with him and who cannot be thought of as a fellow traveler. The main aim of ND was and remains stability within the Eurozone and the common currency.

Samaras’ staff say that what is most important is to be able to re-evaluate the structure of the memorandum with the rest of the EU partners and Greece’s lenders. This, however, would happen only in case the latter appear flexible and give Greece the chance to do so. In case this scenario does not stay afloat, then a second election round will be considered a one-way decision.

Venizelos wants a “national front”

Perhaps his party’s defeat made him open to coalition proposals, so the one sure thing is that within the coming days, PASOK head Evangelos Venizelos will hold talks with ND. He believes that the best coalition scheme should involve ND, PASOK, SYRIZA, DEMAR, ECOLOGISTS-GREENS, LAOS and DISY.

This way, they think they could manage to isolate the Golden Dawn, Independent Greeks and KKE, seen as the extreme sides.

Moreover, PASOK wishes to find other political powers with which to work closely in case another round comes along. Also, Venizelos wants to move forward with the breaking down of the party and its re-establishment. They hold the Left responsible for their defeat and for what will come next.

Alexis Tsipras’ moves

The biggest question lies ahead: will Samaras manage to form a government? Well, if he does not Tsipras, whose SYRIZA party came second, will be the next candidate who will get the mandate to seek for a coalition scheme. Still, though, it is not expected that SYRIZA could agree to form a government together with PASOK and ND.

Instead, Tsipras’ main goal would be a united government of the Left, but even such a result would not produce a majority of 151 parliamentary seats. What is more, KKE has already made it clear they are not going to cooperate with SYRIZA, so Tsipras’ plans can be considered to have sunk already.
