Uprising against the referendum
The whole government and PASOK have been up since dawn today, as the slap in Papandreou's face by European leaders because of the referendum gave a dramatic turn to the current situation, coupled with Evangelos Venizelos' differentiation.

The majority of the ruling party believes that there cannot be a referendum on whether the country will remain in the euro. With the possibility of the country's bankruptcy, the main issue now is to secure the agreement of October 27 for the new rescue package.

MPs and PASOK members are asking the prime minister to take an immediate initiative and cancel the referendum, as the country cannot discuss such an issue, while priority should be given to stability and the implementation of the last European agreement. Members will seek a meeting of the PG so that it can decide accordingly.

If Papandreou does not withdraw, he will be asked to resign from the premiership and facilitate developments, accepting the appointment of another prime minister from the PASOK PG.

PG and no to the referendum by K. Skandalidis

His statement:

"At the cabinet meeting the day before yesterday I asked that the PG be convened urgently, as it is the only actual and collectively functioning central instrument of the Party. It must openly discuss all issues and vote on the country’s and the party’s course.

After yesterday's dramatic developments, the PASOK Parliamentary Group should convene today, before tomorrow's voting, to determine developments collectively.

Otherwise the vote of confidence has no meaning for the government.

It is understood that whether the country’s will remain in the eurozone or not lacks any sense of a referendum; the country's European course is a given and is not negotiable."

Statements by F. Gennimata

"I urge all political forces to consent to the agreement to avoid a referendum," said Fofi Gennimata, distancing herself from the prime minister. "We must no get to the point of questioning our membership in the euro."

Eva Kaili is leaning towards independence too

According to information, Eva Kaili is the next member of PASOK determined to become independent even as as this morning. If this happens, the parliamentary power of the party is confined to a marginal number of 151 seats. It will then be extremely doubtful whether George Papandreou can continue to govern that way.
