Among other things, During his visit to Constantinople Pangalos said to the reporter of Hürriyet: “I see a strong Turkey both economically and politically. People have been successful, and that’s why they are happy and have confidence in themselves. When the Turks were working, we were being lazy. Now we are experiencing the consequences of this situation”.

The vice president continued to take pot shots in all directions and referring to the Greek banking system, he said: “After the acquisition of Finansbank, some nationalists in Greece were upset, but today it is one of our most successful investments. Our own banks have failed, but if they follow the example of the Turkish ones their situation will improve”.
 

Harsh critique by ND

As expected, these new provocative statements have caused a scathing reaction from New Democracy: “Mr. 'we spent it together' strikes again. After describing the public servants as 'mongrels' and the officers of our armed forces as 'counterproductive', he went to Turkey to collectively ridicule all the Greeks. More or less he called us all lazy, saying that 'when the Turks were working, we were being lazy' ”.

The ND spokesperson also said that: “At a critical period for the Greek economy, he attacked the Greek banking system, saying that 'our banks have failed' and that 'they should follow the example of the Turkish ones' ”.

LAOS also replied to what the ND spokesman said. “The vice president’s cynical confession in Constantinople has one truth in it. When we were electing PASOK and New Democracy as our governments, Turkey was introducing Erdoğan. You can never blame the people. They follow their leaders. With good leadership they perform wonders, but with a rotten one they are diminished”, said the party press office.

After all the above, around midnight vice president Theodoros Pangalos issued an explicit denial of the statements attributed to him by the Turkish newspaper, pointing out that he never had any contact with press representatives in Constantinople.

“During his visit to his Holiness the Patriarch of Constantinople, vice president Theodoros Pangalos did not have any contact with representatives of the press. He never made ​​any statements and never gave an interview containing what is mentioned in New Democracy’s announcement or any other”, replied Pangalos' office.
