Greek government passed the multi-bill with losses
Exceeded without difficulty the rejection by George Papandreou and the "present" of Nikitas and Apostolos Kaklamanis - N. Kaklamanis was deleted from the PG of ND - Concern about Papandreou’s attitude
Article 1 that includes the OECD structural measures received 152 "yes", 135 "no" and 1 "present" from Kaklamanis who was removed from the parliamentary group of New Democracy. Article 2 for the recapitalization of banks received 151 "yes", 136 "no" and 1 "present". From the coalition the article voted against by former PM, George Papandreou, while Apostolos Kaklamanis voted as "present".
Last December Greek premier Antonis Samaras from Berlin had reassured members of the German establishment who were concerned about the narrow parliamentary majority, saying that "there are safety cushions for the government." And they worked yesterday so the governmental majority exceeded without difficulty the rejection of the bill by the three coalition MPs.
The buffers were used by Samaras to quickly take the decision of deleting Kaklamanis. The leadership was already thinking about it after Kaklamanis raised his candidacy for the City of Athens. This deletion hopes to strengthen the candidacy of ND csndidate Aris Spiliotopoulos as Kaklamanis is now considered as a "rebel".
But the problem remains with Papandreou and Apostolos Kaklamanis. After the vote Evangelos Venizelos was thinking of how to deal with this and reportedly spoke with Samaras. Venizelos was angry and was moving between remission and intense disapproval. But a deletion would leave the parliamentary majority with 152 MPs. The question is whether Samarass and Venizelos will accept being held hostage by Papandreou and the affect he still has in the PASOK parliamentary group. The government passed this bill with difficulty but has more difficult decisions ahead of it as the troika audits are not finished. The possibility of elections is again on the table and its members are thinking of the appropriate time which will be judged by the result of the European elections.
The voting, however, leaves other wounds in the two ruling parties. The law now creates dissatisfaction in the affected social groups, like bakers, taxi drivers, farmers and pharmacists. The Greek government believes it will outweigh the losses with the positive publicity by the disbursement of the tranche and the distribution of the social dividend. Until the European elections, however, the environment will not be the same. Alexis Tsipras already raises the political tones and in two days he will give an interview at three regional channels showing he is willing to clash with the bigger ones as they are supporting the government.
