They were getting ready for a major terrorist attack

The Antiterrorist Unit is waiting for the ballistic examination results in the three Kalashnikovs in order to determine if they have been used in terrorist attacks, and the search for fingerprints and DNA in the stolen silver Opel Astra, and the questions are whether the armed groups were preparing to attack the southern suburbs or used the car as a mobile hideout and why no one appeared for fifteen days to get the weapons?

It seems likely that the weapons were left in the stolen car for other members of the organization. The Antiterrorist officers are looking over the coincidences that might show who is behind this arsenal:

-       the silver Opel Astra was stolen from Keratea on January 1, a day that Christodoulos Xiros was on prison leave. It only had its back plate on that belongs to another car which had not been reported stolen

-       it was left outside an abandoned home in order not to pull the attention of residents of a residential building and would probably stay there for a long time

-       RPG rockets have been used in the past by 17 November with Christodoulos Xiros and the Revolutionary Struggle of Nikos Maziotis. A rocket launcher was also used in January 2007 on the U.S. embassy and a year ago using the same weapons the guerilla fighters tried to hit the headquarters of New Democracy, but due to a technical problem they used Kalashnikovs

The Hellenic Police are in a state of red alert. Their assessments that a large terrorist attack was being planned were partially confirmed and now they are trying to figure out if the armed groups might proceed to a change in plans.

From January 18 when they located the car it was in constant surveillance with undercover cars and armed officers that were ready to engage with the terrorists.

The perpetrators did not collect the car with the heavy armature probably because they realized they were being watched by the police or because the predetermined time had not yet been reached. The police decided to open the suspicious car this afternoon as a lot of time had passed and having started to draw the attention of local residents they risked being uncovered.
