Schultz: Tsipras is obviously upset

The current president of the European Parliament referred to the recent statements by Alexis Tsipras to the DPA that Martin Schulz gives the impression of being Merkel’s "chosen candidate".
 
Speaking to Deutsche Welle Schultz attributes lack of composure to Tsipras saying "Tsipras is obviously upset otherwise he would not attack me."
 
However, he said he understands Tsipras’ stance, stressing that there is the policy of the democratic left, "which I represent and which is able to actually change Europe."
 
Schultz said that last year Greece "took steps forward and recorded a noticeable surplus in the state budget. This course should be supported. I believe that Greece has a lot of potential. The aim should be growth. If this requires Greece to get an extension of the repayment period of loans and other terms on interest rates, then we should talk to them."
 
As he argued, such a process needs support at the highest levels of political leadership of the EU, while wanting to send a message to Greek voters, he said the challenge for the Greeks in these elections is the majority that will be formed. "That is if it will be a majority that will help in the effort of economic restructuring and will not burden them with new weights and with social democracy as its central pole."
 
Martin Schulz is typically the lead candidate of the German Social Democrats (SPD) for the elections, after an internal party poll conducted Sunday.
 

He took 97.3% of the votes and on the 1st of March he is expected to receive the anointing of the PES (Party of European Socialists) as the common candidate of all the socialist parties of Europe for the presidency of the European Commission in a meeting to be held in Rome.
