Τhe country's governance is up in the air

The resounding "no" by Greeks to the memorandum and the policies of PASOK and ND seems to be leading to a complex situation, perhaps even an impasse. The sample from the exit polls, conducted by four collaborating survey companies, records a total upheaval in the political setting as we know it, and unquestionably a rejection of the policies applied thus far.

Mainly, the sample illustrates the utter collapse of the bi-partisan system, as PASOK and ND appear to garner 37% together at best - that is, 43 fewer percentage points than in 2009!!!

Moreover, the top spot is still being fought for between ND and SYRIZA, with the latter causing a surprise development and almost certainly occupying second place.

Without the 50-seat bonus, the bi-partisan system can by no means form a government. Even with the bonus, it is doubtful whether a government majority could take shape because that would require an approximate 36% depending on the parties entering Parliament.

It looks like parties such as Dora Bakogianni's "Democratic Alliance" and Stefanos Manos' "Action", which would be suitable for contributing to a coalition government with the memorandum parties, will not be entering Parliament.

SYRIZA will shoulder a major part of the responsibility for post-election developments, as the party will most probably receive the mandate of forming a government, and the question which thus arises is whether the numbers and the disposition of the other parties will be conducive to the creation of a government alliance.
