The reconstruction of Phaleron Bay, the new big bet for the Environment
ministry in the coastal front of Athens bearing the signature of famous
Italian architect Renzo Piano, will be carried out mainly with concrete.
By invoking the sustainability of the 600-acre planned park, deputy Environment minister Nikos Sifounakis confirmed yesterday in the plenary session of the parliament that increasing the construction will cover 4,000 sq.m. from the 2,500 m provided for in the preliminary design of the project, with a similar increase in coverage from 5,500 sq.m. to 8,600 sq.m.
According to the minister, the final design includes three piers with bars and restaurants, outdoor sports and art facilities which, however, will be multiplied to cover the operating expenses and maintenance of the park.
So, this brings the necessary amendments to the provisions of the bill on judicial protection and adds: public gathering spaces, parking areas, transport and technical infrastructure, necessary silting in the sea and seashore, marine pipelines, wharves and docks and construction of man-made reefs. Erection of buildings will be permitted on piers and platforms under the terms of the area’s layout and with a maximum height that will be approved by decision of the ministries of Environment, Development, Culture and Tourism.
The changes were deemed imperative to complete the tender documents and accelerate the process so that the 200- million redevelopment project can be included in the NSRF.
As to this cement invasion, the chairman of the parliamentary Environment Committee and PASOK MP Kostas Kartalis has already expressed his opposition, stating that the addition of new commercial uses and silting in the sea changes the presidential decree for the reconstruction of Phaleron Bay for the worse.

It is noted that the reconstruction study of Phaleron Bay has been funded by the Niarchos Foundation, which is constructing one of the greatest interventions with the creation of the new Library and Opera House.
