Snowfall will occur tomorrow, Thursday February 2nd, 2012, in the northern regions of the country. Rains will occur in the southern areas while storms will be rpevalent in the west and eastern Aegean islands. The weather phenomena will be intense at times. The temperature will note a slight rise towards its peak. Frost will occur on the mainland while frost will totally cover the north.


Attica
Weather: overcast with sleet in the south and snow or sleet in the rest of the areas.
Temperature: 4 – 6C.

Thessaloniki
Weather: overcast with a chance of  snowfall.
Temperature: -5 – 2C.
Winds: Easterly 5-7B

Macedonia and Thrace
Weather: strong  snowfall
Winds: easterly 4 – 6B.
Temperature: -8 – 3C, -12 with intense frost in the continental regions.

Ionian, Epirus, the western mainland and western Peloponnisos
Weather: overcast, snowfall
Winds: westerly 4 – 6B
Temperature: 1 – 15C, -3 – 05 in Epirus.

Thessaly, the eastern mainland, Evia and eastern Peloponnisos
Weather: overcast with light snowfall or sleet, and snow in northern Evia, the central mainland and Magnesia.
Winds: northeastern 5 – 9B, with a decrease during the night.
Temperature: -5 – 4C, 4 lower in the north.

Cyclades and Crete
Weather: overcast with localized rains and a chance of stormy weather, snowfall in the mountains of Crete
Winds: southerly-southwesterly 5 – 7B.
Temperature: 5 – 13C.

Dodecanese and eastern Aegean
Weather: overcast with chances of snowfall. Gradual storms during the evening hours
Winds: southerly-southwesterly 4 – 6B.
Temperature: 5 – 13C in the Dodecanese, 0 – 7 in the northern Aegean.

Crete is freezing as well, expecting overcast skies with rainfall or sleet in the southern lowlands and light snowfall in the rest of its regions, northern-northeastern winds 8 – 6B, and the temperature between 2 – 8C.

Schools closed

Schools in municipalities of Penteli, Nea Pentlei and Melissia will remain closed after relevant decisions of the mayors in consultation with local authorities and principals of elementaries and secondary education.

At 10 in the morning, lessons will begin in primary and secondary schools in the municipality of Dionysus to ensure safe access of pupils to schools due to the frost.

By decision of the municipality of Kifissia, due to frost, schools of the region will open at 10am. Same thing will apply for Vrilissia and Anavrita.

Schools in Likovrisi, Pefki and Metamorphosi will remain closed. Schools will operate normally in Filothei and Aghia Paraskevi.

Schools will also remain closed in Karpenisi, and the municipalities of Dirfia-Messapia, Mantoudi and Limnis-Aghia Anna, in Evia.


Friday

In eastern Macedonia, Thrace and northeastern Aegean there will be clouds and rainfall in the afternoon, snowfall in the mounatins and storms during the night. In the rest of the country there will be clouds, with localized rainfall, snowfall in the mountains. Storms in the west. Easterly winds in the north will reach 6B. Temperatures will be further increased. Frost mainly in the northern continental areas.

Ships will remain docked in ports
Ferries will operate from Piraeus to Crete.

Prohibiting departures remains in force from the ports of Piraeus, Rafina and Lavrion heading to the Cyclades and the Dodecanese, because of strong winds in many sea areas and in places, it will reach 9 B.

Passengers due to travel would be advised to communicate with local port authorities and travel agencies.
