The figures which were published, at the dawn of the International Day Against Child Abuse, are shocking.
The president of "Smile of the Child" Kostas Giannakopoulos has stated that "it is scary that child abuse is increasing, but the reports are not increasing correspondingly". In most cases child abuse remains a taboo and a secret.
During the first 10 months of 2011, the National SOS Hotline for Children received 369 reports for 711 children in danger. The most discouraging element is that 90% of the persons reporting the abuse were the parents themselves.
The problem is graver for infants and up to children of 6 years of age, who represent 42% of the reports. 31% refers to children from 7-12 years of age and 15% to children from 13-18 years of age.
51% is physical abuse, 41% is neglect and abandonment, 3% concerns children being forced to beg, 3% is psychological abuse and 2% sexual abuse.
According to social workers, there is no help from the State and there is an increase in neglect due to financial difficulties.
The "Smile of the Child" at the moment has 11 homes in which 285 children are being cared for, and the National Hotline for Children SOS operating 24/7 is free, anonymous and staffed by social workers and psychologists.
