UPD:
A meeting which is about to take place in Athens is expected to
determine the final choice of the former Vice President of the ECB, Lucas Papademos, on whether or not he will take on the fortunes of the country during such a crucial time.
According to reports, Mr. Papademos has initially agreed upon the outline of the decision of the two PASOK and ND leaders, G. Papandreou and A. Samaras, that he will assume the position of Prime Minister, but it is clear that he wants to set terms himself and discuss what his function within the government will be.
Put simply, the former banker wishes to govern and not simply by an executor of orders. According to protothema.gr information, the visiting Harvard University professor will raise two points, seeking a clear and binding assurance on both.
1) He wants to be the absolute master of the game. As protothema.gr heard from one of Papademos’ interlocutors and a member of his inner circle, “we all remember what happened during the Zolotas administration in 1989”. Papademos wants to avoid that.
He wants to avoid exposure to the scrutiny of Europeans. Besides, any failure could discredit his brilliant career. In short, he wants personal commitments from everyone that he will be a normal Prime Minister and not a conditional one.
2) If he needs to take new measures, he will want to know exactly what they will be and how he will need to act. It is stressed that soon, given the failed 2011 budget by about 5 billion, there needs to be additional measures. So it makes perfect sense to know in advance what the binding intentions of Papandreou and Samaras are going to be.

Within the fermentations concerning the establishment of the new government, Mr. Samaras and Mr. Papandreou had their first telephone call shortly after 14:30. As was made known by government sources more will follow, while the leaders might also meet during the day.
