Papandreou asked for a vote of confidence in order to negotiate a
coalition government, contradicting the scenarios that had him on the
podium announcing his resignation
Specifically, the PM said “tomorrow I will visit the President of the Republic to start a consultation on the creation of national coalition government; to proceed with the dialogue on the targets, the program, and even the head of that government.
Papandreou stressed that “some people want a government run by interests. We will not tolerate a looting from collapsing interests.” He said his acts are aimed at being a symbol of something new for the country. ”I want you to understand the sincerity of my intentions. I will shoulder the political costs and my responsibilities” he added.
Samaras is asking for elections as soon as possible and accepts a temporary transitional government as a last resort. The solution is a cross-party support of this agreement for the good of the country in order to have a strong government and proceed to elections when things quieten down, Papandreou added.
He also said that we should follow these steps:
- Greece will do everything required for the implementation of the agreement

- Greece will do everything required for the implementation of the agreement
- The package should be supported by all parties
- The parliamentary vote of confidence in the government is a mandate
- We secure the disbursement of the 6th tranche as soon as possible
- We affirm to our partners that Greece will do anything that the agreement requires
Regarding our partners, Papandreou sent a message saying “foreign partners must have faith in Greek people. They are made for hard times” and that “the G20 must recognize that besides countries there are people.”
