EYDAP is preparing to sell water to the islands and expertise to international markets by organizing the complex activities that will make the Public Water Supply more competitive.

The draft that’s being prepared by the new CEO Nick Bardis foresees the creation of a separate subsidiary of EYDAP, which will take care to "quench" the arid islands at a low cost.

This is about the stranglehold of the existing monopoly system with the water trucks which, beyond its anachronistic nature, costs around 13 million euros annually to the national economy. The cost reaches 10 euros per cubic meter in the remote islands.

"EYDAP of the Islands" will cover the entire island region of the country and through studies of the functionality of the existing facilities, needs and capabilities of each island, will assume management of their water resources. The plans for the islands coincide with the "padding" of the company’s reservoirs, which are approaching more than 1 million cubic meters and constitute an historical high for EYDAP.

According to Bardis, Mornos will overflow with 4 more meters.

"Wings abroad"

While talking to reporters, the head of the company appeared very positive about the extension of the project to the islands which along with the expansion of EYDAP abroad, are some of the key priorities he has set.

The management plan of Libya’s water supply has stopped at the moment because of the political turmoil. EYDAP had agreed with the Chinese company MCC and the plan would have provided an investment of 6 billion euros. "We will return when the conditions allow us to" said Bardis, who revealed that similar plans exist for the regions of Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan and the Dead Sea.

He appeared negative about the plan to privatize EYDAP to serve the fiscal purposes of the government, saying that it does not meet the developmental objectives of the Company. "It will not benefit EYDAP if a 10% or 20% is sold, other than bring some money to the state, which will be much less than the company’s true value", said the CEO.

He appeared critical about the choices and investment plans of the company in the past. He described as "stupid" the sludge drier in Psyttalia that cost a fortune and he said it would have been better to burn waste.

In fact, he revealed recently that Veolia experts visited the island in order to increase the biogas energy production that currently represents only 20% of the operation of the facility.
