The first incidents

The committees against tolls from all over the country are organizing new demonstrations, starting with lifting the bars on March 27th.

Their movement continues to ignore the exhortations of the state to obey the laws, especially since the regulation that defines non-payment as a traffic code violation has been in force since March 3.

One can even find instructions on the web about how they can overcome this amendment of Reppas, urging them to either raise the bars where there are no police officers to impose fines, obtain a credit receipt or even sign a letter of payment failure!

However, a few days ago there was an intense incident on Attiki Odos when an employee of the company refused to issue a credit receipt to the drivers that would not pay. The bars stayed down and when the police came (Papagos and Aspropyrgos) they issued a fine of 200 euros and took the drivers' licenses and plates. The people were then taken to the police stations for traffic obstruction and lawsuits were filed on both sides.

Motorway execs maintain that the police orders are perfectly clear and that from now on those who don’t pay are in violation of the code and therefore will have to face the relevant penalties.

The police remain numb by this new drudgery…

Up to now, though, and given that the law is new, very few fines have been issued, making the members of the movement believe that without the assistance of the police the law will remain unenforceable.
