Tensions during the educational rally

Tensions and arrests marred today's educational rally in Syntagma square, Athens.

The clash began with protesting university students trying to break through the police lines, while the latter responded with tear gas.

Four of the protesters were slightly injured, while five more people were arrested and led to Police headquarters in downtown Athens.

Later on, hundreds of protesters belonging to the non-parliamentary left wing gathered in the Propylea and marched on towards Parliament. The protest shouts were directed mainly against the Troika memorandum and the suggested changes to the educational system by the Minister of Education.

While the main bulk of the protesters demonstrated before Parliament building, some of them attempted to push through the police line and move against the building itself. The protesters were pushed back while some clashed with police, resulting in the injury of four of the former.

The five people arrested and led to Police headquarters were followed closely by a few of the protesters, while a small group of people broke off and headed towards the Polytechnic University on Patision Street.
