Greece to nominate the Philippi archaelogical site to UNESCO World Heritage List
The Culture ministry gave written assurances to the municipality of Kavala, in Northern Greece, that the archaeological site of Philippi will be the official Greek nomination to the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The archaeological site of Philippi is inextricably connected with the glorious city founded by the Macedonian king Philip, and the famous battle that determined the future of the Roman Empire.

"It is a joint effort of all local organisations, which not only will highlight the multiple historical value of a renowned since antiquity and early Christian years area, but it will also motivate a series of works that will contribute to the further international exposure and recognition," the mayor Kostis Simitsis told ANA-MPA.

The Culture ministry will present the nomination file at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris in September and the international organization will evaluate it in February 2015. The Mayor of Kavala is optimistic about the evaluation results and, as he stressed, in the following months the municipality will ask the support of important figures associated with the city, e.g. the renowned author Vasilis Vasilikos.
