Once again Easter celebrations soaked in blood in Greece

The two most serious  incidents occurred in Crete and Santorini.

A young man died of gunshots, "mpalothies",  (a dangerous Cretan custom) during  a Cretan feast , while an American tourist was injured badly by the firecracker explosion that took place in the courtyard of a church in Oia.

The 25-year-old man died on Sunday during the Easter feast when a 41-year-old man pulled out his gun and started shooting in the air as per the Cretan custom.

According to information, the gun suffered a jam and fatally wounded the 25-year-old footballer, Giorgos Gyparakis, whereas a 23-year-old man was seriously wounded.

The 41-year-old man who fired during the Easter celebration was arrested and is held in custody.

The second incident took place in Santorini where three American tourists and one Greek businessman were injured by a firecracker explosion.

One of the three Americans was badly injured and underwent surgery in Venizelos Hospital. The doctors declared her condition critical, as apart from the wounds to the abdomen she also suffered burns on different parts of her body. However, doctors are optimistic about her recovery.

The three other people, two Americans and the 50-year-old Greek businessman, who were also injured by the firecracker explosion in the courtyard of the church of Our Lady of the Akathist Hymn, were also transferred to the same hospital.
