Persuasion attempts in view of multi-bill vote – 12 MPs disagree
MPs will agree when they see the provisions, Maximos Mansion says – It will be filed tomorrow and voted under urgent procedures until Sunday evening
Despite the fact that the Greek government keeps a low profile and downplays the issue, the number of MPs expressing reservations about individual settings in the multi-bill and warn that they will not vote in its favor, increases.
Twelve MPs of New Democracy and PASOK, have said they disagree with the settings. Still the most important one is for milk. Rural Development Deputy Minister Maximos Charakopoulos said he supports the proposal of cattle farmers and reiterated that if the arrangement is filed as it is, he will resign from the government. There is dissatisfaction among MPs also because they do not know when they will get the text of the bill. One of the dissenters said, "they will force us to vote against it, not knowing what we are voting against."
PASOK has meetings to persuade its MPs to dispel any doubts. Things in the ND are handled by the leadership of the Development Ministry in a more aggressive manner. While there had been no meeting until yesterday with parliamentarians, Minister Kostis Hadjidakis said the arrangements for milk and other open issues aim to reduce the prices.
At the same time he had a meeting with Thimios Limperopoulos of the taxi owners who suspended their strike. This move caused the reaction of PASOK, which via Odysseas Konstantinopoulos said that "we cannot make reforms in agreement with Thimios." Thanos Moraitis MP complains for a customer mindset in the function of the government.
Development Deputy Minister Thanassis Skordas showed the government's intentions on the issue of milk saying "there can be no change in the substance of the agreement for milk."
The bill will be adopted, as the relative majority of the coalition is enough, taking into account the imprisoned members of the Golden Dawn. The question is whether the bill will be passed without casualties. If the majority of 153 MPs gets further reduced then one cannot exclude political developments after its adoption. However, it will be filed Friday, will be discussed and voted under the urgent procedure until Sunday evening. It is doubtful whether MPs will have enough time to read the multi-page text in order to know what they are voting for or against.
