Die Welt: The big profiteering of NGOs in Greece
Reportage of the German newspaper entitled "The big profiteering of NGOs in Greece" refers to the scandal of non-governmental organizations in Greece
Today's article in the German newspaper Die Welt entitled "The big profiteering of NGOs in Greece" refers to the scandal of non-governmental organizations in Greece.
As the article says "there were times when the state coffers in Greece were a self-service shop for people who do jobs and have good connections. The last five years the chances for fraud and misuse decreased drastically, thanks to the increasingly stringent conditions set by the international lenders. However a taboo area remained: the non-governmental organizations (NGOs). In Greece there are about 6,000 of them, which until now had never seriously been audited by the economic authorities. Meanwhile, about 3,000 of the public auditors are being checked. The first results are shocking.
Apparently some NGOs were neither philanthropic nor charitable, but were aimed at self-enrichment. Some people will have to answer now before the court. So far it is not clear how much of taxpayers' money was lost, but it is definitely double-digit numbers of million euros only for the period 2000-2004."
The article then refers to various cases of NGOs that have been targeted by the Greek authorities, such as the International Demining Centre and the Voluntary Corp of Greek Firemen and Reforesters (ESEPA).
