Rehn: The negotiation for the Greek debt will take place this summer
The negotiation for the Greek debt and the fiscal program of 2015-2016 will take place this summer
As European Commissioner for Economic and Monetary Affairs Olli Rehn said from Davos the negotiations for the 2015-2016 fiscal program and the debt of Greece will begin in the summer.
The initial estimate of the Greek government was that these discussions would come in the spring, once Eurostat would announce its financial assessment of Greece for 2013, which will also show the primary surplus.
The Greek government has been entrenched in the final budget implementation data of 2013 that show a primary surplus of 603 million euros. Finance Minister Yannis Stournaras will present these figures on his European counterparts in the eurogroup on January 27 instead of an agreement with the Troika.
Possibly the haircut of the debt will be done after the elections, as Olli Rehn said, so as not to create an impression on voters in other European countries that they will pay extra money for Greece’s economic stability.
On the evaluation of the current program, Rehn said it will be completed "within the next few months" and hoped the technical team will return in Athens before the end of the month. The heads of the troika, he added, will return a little later.
