Samaras: There were mistakes in the program - Now we are fixing them
He presented the objectives of the Greek Presidency - "The citizens, in the European elections, should not vote with the bitter taste of the crisis"
"After six years Greece enters a growth phase, I am proud that my country stands back on its feet," the prime minister told the European Parliament and thanked the people of Europe for their support.
In his speech the prime minister said: "Greece was tested more than any other country in crisis. It was tested due to her own mistakes, due to manufacturing errors of the single currency and the errors of the first program. Greece was tested but it survived. Now it enters the path of consolidation and recovery."
"I am proud that my country is back on its feet," Samaras continued. "Greece has achieved the highest financial correction ever made. It managed to reduce the deficit by 13%, but it lost 25% of its GDP, the average citizen has lost 38% of his income, youth unemployment reached 60%. Greece implemented one of the biggest and most sweeping reform programs. The results became apparent, Greece had a primary surplus in 2013. It is estimated to have growth in 2014 after six years of recession. We still have a lot to do, but we managed to stabilize the country and its economy."
"We need to overcome any support. Reforms work better under recovery and growth conditions. We achieved them thanks to the sacrifices of the Greek people and the support of our partners. I want to thank the people of Europe for the solidarity shown to Greece. Greece avoided a disorderly bankruptcy and achieved a greater debt reduction."
"Mistakes were made in the first phase of the program which I observed when I was in opposition and we fixed them when I became Prime Minister. This is why the program pays back and we have a primary surplus."
Samaras spoke about the role of the European parliament. "The European Parliament should be strengthened, should control the decisions. We want a strong parliament. The EU has been tested in recent years, its consistency, strength and its common currency and its construction problems have shown up. Now the crisis is left behind. This is my commitment so that in the European elections European citizens should not to vote with the bitter sense of crisis but with the feeling that the crisis is left behind."
