FEIR: The economic climate in Greece is stabilized
The Institute estimates that stabilization converges with the gradual weakening of the recession but the conditions for further improvement have not been created yet
The Economic Sentiment Indicator in Greece remained unchanged at 90.9 points for December too, almost in the same levels as in November.
According to a survey by the Foundation for Economic and Industrial Research (FEIR) there was a deterioration in business confidence in December, smaller in the industrial sector and stronger in construction, which are outweighed by increases in retail trade and consumer confidence while the expectations in the services sector remain unchanged.
From the results of the year it is obvious that after the gradual improvement in the index since mid-2012 and the first half of 2013, during the second half of the year, the index stabilized at levels of 90-91 units. According to FEIR, this also converges with the gradual weakening of the recession as well, reflected in official economic data and reflects the easing of the pessimism that dominated the expectations of citizens and businesses.
The prolonged stagnation of the index, however, reveals that conditions to further improve these expectations doesn’t seem to have been formed. This is mainly due to the high level unemployment, the increased tax burdens for citizens and businesses, the continued decline in consumption etc. More specifically:
- in the industrial sectror the forecasts for the short-term evolution of the production are slightly gaining ground with stocks showing a slight swelling
- in services, assessments of the current business activity have weakened, as have the estimates for the current demand of sales

- in construction, adverse predictions for the program operations of businesses have intensified, while the index for the intended employment is significantly losing ground
- in consumer confidence, the predictions for the household's financial situation have worsened while the economic situation of the country has changed positively
Finally, predictions for the evolution of unemployment in the next 12 months come out as slightly less unfavorable.
- in construction, adverse predictions for the program operations of businesses have intensified, while the index for the intended employment is significantly losing ground
- in consumer confidence, the predictions for the household's financial situation have worsened while the economic situation of the country has changed positively
Finally, predictions for the evolution of unemployment in the next 12 months come out as slightly less unfavorable.
