Samaras - Venizelos: No chance for elections
Greek Deputy Prime Minister’s statements after his meeting with the Prime Minister in the U.S.
Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras is in New York from Saturday night where he met with the Deputy Prime Minister Evangelos Venizelos, who then departed for Athens.
Samaras and Venizelos informed each other and discussed developments after the arrests of the Secretary General and members of the Golden Dawn.
Speaking to reporters, Venizelos ruled out the possibility of general elections, adding that the Greek government is looking for the constitutional possibilities to even avoid the regional elections in case of resignation of the members of the Golden Dawn because of the abusive exercise of the option. However, he said that it will probably not be necessary, suggesting that Golden Dawn MPs will not proceed to a collective resignation.
"Democracies have mechanisms for self-protection," Venizelos said, adding that the Greek government supports Justice, who is also an institution protecting the Democracy.
The PASOK president did not hide his satisfaction at the progress of things well, as he reminded he has insisted for a while on the dynamic response to the Golden Dawn.
He also spoke against SYRIZA, saying that he feels they are embarrassed, connecting it to the fact that the Golden Dawn was one of the parties in disapproval of the memorandum, just like SYRIZA.
