40 billion euros additional revenue in Germany due to the crisis

Low interest rates and high demand of federal securities during the period 2010-2014 yielded additional revenue of 40.9 billion euros for Germany.

According to an answer of the German Finance Ministry to a parliamentary question by Social Democratic MP Joachim Poss, which is published by Der Spiegel magazine, Germany benefited from the crisis as investors moved away from the bonds of countries that are in crisis and turned to German state bonds.

According to Deutsche Welle, the benefit of low interest rates and the unexpectedly high tax revenue resulted in Germany borrowing less than what was initially estimated. Between 2010 and 2012 it borrowed a total of 73 billion euros less than what was provided for in the initial initially.

The cost of the euro-crisis is so far only at 599 million euros, however, as noted by a telegram by the German news agency, this could change dramatically from a second haircut on the Greek debt.
