Schäuble: We discussed Greece's exit from the euro when Papandreou wanted a referendum
German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schäuble has revealed that the core of the eurozone leaders had made plans for Greece's exit from the common currency.

In an interview with the German newspaper «Die Zeit», Schäuble said that when former Prime Minister George Papandreou expressed his intention to hold a referendum in Greece, the Europeans had discussed the consequences of the country’s possible exit from the euro.

"The referendum did not take place. But even if the Greek people had then decided against remaining in the euro, which I do not think would have happened based on last election results, the euro would have survived," Schäuble said.

Replying to a question about what conditions would break up the Eurozone, the German Finance Minister said he cannot even imagine that the euro could collapse.

Finally, referring to the newly formed party "Alternative for Germany", which propagates the country's exit from the euro, Schäuble predicted that it will not have a fair chance since, as he believes, the Germans fully support the common currency.
