The Greek tax authorities make a final compromise offer to those taxpayers for whom the tax audit began after 2008, so they can pay smaller fines and penalties when they voluntarily correct any errors or declare incomes they had forgotten in the previous years.
The Finance Ministry multibill states that if after an audit for 2008 or earlier, taxpayers engage in voluntary filing to amend their tax return statements, they will save 80% of the surcharges and fines.
But with another provision it opens the door for online seizures. Even with an email, even if there is no final court ruling, the Greek tax authorities will be able to seize salaries, pensions, rents and deposits.
The collection processes to be followed by tax offices include:
- sending notices to borrowers by any appropriate means (snail mail, e-mail, SMS, etc.). Borrowers will have a period of a few days to go to their Tax Office to pay off or settle their overdue debts
- coercive recovery measures in case of non-attendance by a debtor with seizures of income or other amounts the borrowers are to collect from third parties. Especially for salaries and pensions, the law provides for a seizure of up to 25% of the total monthly amount and only if the sum is greater than 1,000 euros. The amount remaining after the seizure cannot be less than 1,000 euros.
