Kouvelis: No more horizontal measures

Speaking at the Central Committee of the Democratic Left, Fotis Kouvelis put forth the diptych "no other horizontal measures" and "renegotiation of the memorandum and the loan agreement."

He added that "we cannot rest assured that we have escaped default, or ensured our stay in the euro, if we do not implement specific policies of deep progressive reform with equal distribution of burdens. We are drafting a plan for rebuilding the country and this requires a difficult and painstaking effort."

The Democratic Left president said that "soon there will be a political initiative to raise the issue of renegotiation at a high political level in the EU beyond the Troika. However, nothing will happen if we do not deal with the recession."

Moreover, Kouvelis identified the role of the Democratic Left in the government. "We are not here only to monitor and control the governmental work, but to contribute to proposals and positions. We support the government. We will strenuously and systematically demand that the programmatic agreement and convergence are kept on the initial track."
