Venizelos: "We must have a government by tomorrow night"

Shortly after Mr. Evangelos Venizelos met with Antonis Samaras, in whose hands lies the exploratory mandate to form a government, the former made statements a little before 19:00pm.

Among other things, Mr. Venizelos expressed the importance of not wasting any valuable time and that Greece should send a clear message of national cohesion and joint responsibility.

“The country needs to have a government immediately, by tomorrow evening”, stated Mr. Venizelos at the beginning of his speech.

Mr. Venizelos launched a scathing attack against SYRIZA and the party president, Alexis Tsipras, arguing that his party made it clear enough that it will not participate in any government, but asked all the others to form one, and demanded that the government, which will be formed with a New Democracy core, must implement the SYRIZA program. PASOK’s president noted, however, that a “perfect solution would be a national coalition government with ND, SYRIZA, PASOK and DIMAR”.

Finally, emphasizing the historic moment, Mr. Venizelos added that there should be no time lost and it is important “to send a message abroad of national cohesion and shared responsibility”
