New election date on Friday night or Saturday

After the complete failure of all efforts to form a government and in order to investigate whether it is possible to form a interim one to lead the country to elections, the President of the Republic will proceed to a new meeting of political leaders.

Tomorrow's meeting will be held at 1 pm and will explore whether political leaders will agree on the person of the prime minister. If this process fails, then the President will give the mandate to form a government to one of the three heads of the supreme courts of the country (Areios Pagos, Council of State and Court of Auditors). The last interim Greek prime minister was Supreme Court chairman Yiannis Grivas, for the period of October 12 - November 23, 1989, appointed after the resignation of the Tzannetakis government, in order to conduct the elections of November 1989.

The presidential decree that will dissolve the parliament and set the date for elections is expected to be issued on Friday evening or Saturday morning as a series of outstanding parliamentary issues prevents their immediate declaration.

According to the parliamentary schedule, the convening of parliament will be held on Thursday 17.05.2012, at 11 am, in order to see the swearing in of the MPs elected on May 6. The meeting will be chaired by Vyron Polydoras as he and Tasos Kourakis were the only members of the previous parliament composition that managed to get re-elected.

At 11 am on Friday the parliament will meet again to elect a new president and the afternoon will proceed with the election of the vice presidents.

The lifespan of this parliament will last a few hours as immediately after the completion of the above procedures, the chairman will dissolve it and announce new elections, with June 10th and 17th as the most likely dates.
