They spoke about a government of 3 parties but the plan failed
The country is headed for elections and the political leaders consult again at noon on Wednesday under the President of the Republic to agree on the choice of an interim prime minister.

The wreck of the Tuesday meeting seemed fated, since SYRIZA refused to give any support or even a tolerance vote, while there were tensions in the dialogues among the political leaders.

During the meeting, Tsipras asked participants to refrain from alarmism on the issue of the euro, making PASOK president Evangelos Venizelos ask "who is an alarmist? Merkel and Juncker?".

Venizelos continued by remembering Constantine Karamanlis, who had stated that many things are said but do not get done, and many things get done but are not said, and noted that within the country they should be prepared even for such an eventuality.

Tsipras urged the other leaders to proceed with forming a government since the numbers tally, while Papoulias even spoke about the freezing of measures by the new government.

The SYRIZA president accused Venizelos and Samaras of insisting on the commitments towards Merkel, repeating that he will not betray the people.

Samaras appeared to agree to government support even without the participation of ND, and accused SYRIZA that it actually wants to lead the country out of the euro.

Kammenos accused ND and PASOK of rejecting his proposals, even though they could have agreed and formed a government for national purposes.

The meeting of the four and the background

Also, the dialogues suggest that the Presidentof the Republic made one last attempt to overcome the resistance, mainly by Fotis Kouvelis, to form a government even without the participation of SYRIZA.

It seems that the President had clarified that Tsipras would not support any effort for it and shifted his efforts to the chairman of the Democratic Left. It is indicative that as he was listening to Kouvelis explain why he wants the participation of SYRIZA, he interrupted to make the following observation:

KAROLOS PAPOULIAS (President of the Republic): So we are making SYRIZA the regulator of the country’s salvation?

In another part, and while Kouvelis pointed out the necessity of Tsipras’ support, Papoulias said: "I accept that, but you must open a parenthesis and say that many things will depend on a government policy that can touch the social strata. A populist policy agenda within this government we are saying we will support may have greater social support."

Venizelos brought harsh criticism against SYRIZA, saying "I want to tell you that there is a strange petty and arrogant political attitude, historically ignorant and mismatched against the size of the crisis. I said we will not assume more responsibility than our share, but certainly national responsibility is unlimited, and in a democracy it must be allocated according to the power of each political party. This is what democracy says and it must be understood by the other parties."

Lastly, the ND president explained the necessity of SYRIZA’s participation in government, but indicated that in order to avoid the risk of possible elections, he would agree to a formation without it.
