L. Papademos: “We will need to make huge efforts”

“The new government’s main goal will be to realize the decisions of the EU leaders’ Summit of October 26th and 27th and implement the economic policy deriving from them. It will also have to safeguard their implementation of the relevant programmes during its tenure”.

Papademos was very clear concerning the present pressing prioritites of his government during his speech as the new premier heading the first cabinet meeting of his government,

He clarified that his government will continue with the existing financial stability programmes as they are and will also see to applying the revised one which will result from the meetings he will be having with the Troika within the coming weeks, making sure above all to ensure their implementation!

Papademos underlined that sticking to the targets requires extreme effort on his part as the time limit he has in his hands is very specific.

“We begin with our duties already from today and the first great challenges will have to be faced in the coming week” (!). He then pointed out that although the new scheme has the support of all sides participating in it, there is still a lot to be done.

It is not only a matter of limiting the deficit, but also of curbing the debt. The final result, Papademos said, will be based on the stabilization of the real economy and the fight against uneployment.

Finally, the new Greek Prime minister said that, “if there are weaknesses, delays and changes in the results we are hoping to get, the overall job that we were called upon to do will not be successful. Thus, I am asking for the help of everyone in order to achieve the best outcome.”

His aforementioned words illustrate his sincere intentions to work hard and bring about the desirable result in the short time he has ahead of him.
