Trash is a very sad Greek reality these days and as it has bagun being a public health risk, too, the Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs, Paris Koukoulopoulos, announced earlier on Thursday that private companies will take the situation in their own hands and begin collecting them from the capital and other cities’ streets this afternoon.

“Give it some more days”, he said, “and this picture will belong to the past.”

According to Koukoulopoulos, it is not certain yet if the workers who are occupying garbage depository sites will be paid their monthly salary or not. It has been suggested that the employees decided to occupy the sites and did not go on a strike because this way they would get paid as if they were working.

The workers themselves say they are not willing to step back while their president, Mr Balassopoulos, insisted they are all ready to fight even against the private companies which are about to collect the trash.
