Minister of Administrative Reform Dimitris
Reppas admitted on Tuesday evening that the Troika demands layoffs of
public servants of both permanent and indefinite contracts.
The reduction will be achieved through redundancy, retirement or dismissal. There was a discussion on constitutional obstacles relating to decisions to dismiss civil servants, but as was mentioned this could be achieved by eliminating organic positions. Reppas stressed that in such a case, all personnel working in the services under elimination will be evaluated.
MPs who attended the meeting made it clear that the PASOK parliamentary group cannot bear the burden of such a decision. Several of them pointed out that Greek society cannot afford more unemployment. They proposed larger reductions of public spending and more cuts in wages.
Reppas responded to the acusations by New Democracy about government recruitment of public servants, saying that they hired 8.000 regular staff in the areas of Health, Justice and Security Forces.
He added that there was a drastic reduction of project contracts and provided evidence of hundreds of thousands of recruitments made by the Karamanlis government between 2004 and 2009.
