Student marches today in the centre of Athens

Student marches took place in the city center of Athens, whilst the symbolic occupations in Universities and Technical Institutions all over Greece are expanding.

Many groups of university students affiliated with the communist Party have marched towards Omonia Square, whilst high school students are marching towards the Propylaea, so many streets of the center are closed off.

At the moment, 301 universities are under occupation and many institutions are worried they will be occupied shortly. First-year students cannot enroll since the secretariat offices are also closed.

The Ministry of Education has informed the public that enrollments should take place between 12-30 September and those that will not enroll will lose their right of registration.

There were some incidents with vandals during the student marches after 3 o' clock, when they smashed the front window of the Ianos bookshop, as well as a bank’s storefront. Most students booed the vandals and tried to stop them. However, the press was also the victim of violence when the vandals attacked the van of ERT, the national TV station, injuring a cameraman. Afterwards, they vandalized the building of the National Bank with spray and paints.
