UPD:
Mr. Andreas Loverdos will attend parliament tomorrow, holding around 40 applications in his hand for registration in the National Donor Register of the National Transplant Organization (NOT).
The Health Minsiter will distribute the requests to his colleagues in the Cabinet, as well as the Prime Minister, in light of the significant effort being made by the Health Ministry leadership to disseminate the message of the value of organ donations and transplants.
Mr. Loverdos, as well as deputy ministers Michalis Timosidis, Christos Aidonis and Markos Bolaris, and general secretaries Antonis Demopoulos, Nikos Polizos and Giorgos Katrivanos, have all signed up for NOT’s National Donor Registry.
Today, organ donors in our country do not exceed 7 per 1 million of the population, while to cover just the basic needs, this requires 25 per million. The Health Ministry’s aim is to cover this shortfall with a new law, extending the relationship degree between donor and patient and institutionalizing the presumed consent, namely that everyone is a potential donor unless they explicitly state otherwise.
Five new transplants
Meanwhile, five transplants were completed last weekend as a result of a concerted effort made by the intensive care doctors of Chania General Hospital, in collaboration with doctors from hospitals of Athens, Thessaloniki and Patras, as well as Herakleion, the Ambulance Service and the Air Force.
The death of a 48 year-old who succumbed to a brain haemorhage after a fall, gave a new chance at life to five people.
