Greeks are about half a million fewer than the number estimated by the ELSTAT calculations carried out in 2009, as well as 200.000 fewer than recorded in the 2001 census!

This disappointing picture emerges from the preliminary figures of the recent official census, as announced by the Greek Statistical Authority. Reasons for the large decrease in the country’s population could include the aging population and the economic crisis which troubles couples in terms of whether to have a family or not. Additionally, one cause is also the wave of immigration abroad which has been going on for two years.

Possibly this image is magnified by the reluctance of citizens to take part in the census for various reasons.

Specifically, the general consensus of 2001 showed a population of 10.946.020, while in 2009 the population was estimated to be over 11.282.571.
