Intense concern prevails in the governmental ranks after yesterday’s transformation of Syntagma square into a “gas chamber” while the mid-term was being discussed in parliament.

Police forces and hooded hoodlums fiercely attacked the protesters, thus conveying images of anarchy through the international media regarding the current situation in our country.

The mid-term might have been ratified by all the PASOK MPs except one, but shortly after tens of people were being injured a few meters away from parliament by the excessive use of violence and mainly of chemicals.

The governmental enthusiasm could not be expressed, since reactions are expected to continue today in view of the implementation law voting. It seems that the headache of Syntagma square will follow the government in all its moves, affecting the psychology of its MPs who are already worried – especially those who initially disagreed with the mid-term – about the climate they will face next weekend in their constituencies.

However, no surprises are expected during the voting on the implementation legislation. The main opposition leader has stated that his party will vote in favor of some articles, but there are some PASOK MPs who might vote against some articles even though they voted for the implementation law. According to last night’s assurances of some close colleagues of Papandreou, there won’t be an issue of party discipline for those who will vote against some of the articles.

The government’s next bet is the implementation of the two laws. Many of its MPs admit that it will impossible to implement the mid-term and get the expected results within the specific strict time framework. Thus, many expect the next aid from the partners. And as everything shows, so does the government with hopes of climbing up a few steps in the public opinion polls.

Finally, the cabinet will have an informal meeting today, to discuss the bill for universities already prepared by Education Minister Anna Diamantopoulou.
