The government is a captive of the election rumors
The apparent inability to achieve consensus in the political arena in order to promote the hard reform program, a prerequisite if the country wants new economic aid, has again fueled rumors of early elections. Scenarios even come with dates attached, the latest being Sunday, July 23!

On one hand the rumors have caused the government spokesman, Giorgos Petalotis, to express an explicit denial, but the solution of the elections is being discussed more and more in the governmental camp, not only because of the negative attitude of Antonis Samaras. The ministers' inability to establish a credible mid-term program that will convince Brussels, but also the discomfort of many MPs who believe that the Greek society cannot afford other painful measures and the dismissal of civil servants, are charging the climate so that early elections and seeking a different political solution are now a part of daily conversations.

The atmosphere in the P.G. of PASOK is heavy and many members are thinking of proposing the adoption of the mid-term program by a wider majority of 180 parliament votes, so that the ruling party will not bear the burden of such an effort on its own.
